Slavery Past and heritage

In collaboration with The National Institute for the Study of Dutch Slavery and Its Legacy (NiNsee), Africa in the Picture is presenting the North American film Traces of the Trade. In this documentary, the white North American De Wolf family are horrified to discover their own past. They owe their wealth to the slave trade. The film touchingly and sincerely shows their desperation as they journey to Ghana, where they witness the commemoration ceremonies of the descendents of slaves; to Cuba, where a plantation of ancestors is located; and at home, in conversation with African-Americans.

Friday 11 Sept. 4:30 PM Room 1
After the film, there will be an interview with director Katherina Brown and NiNsee academic researcher Aspha Bijnaar, going deeper into the effects of this film. How have these revelations affected the relationships between the members of the De Wolf? And after having acquired this knowledge, what is the family now doing about it?
