African Diaspora
African Diaspora focuses on films made by directors of African origin. This year we again have a unique offering of films from the African diaspora (North and South America, Europe and the Caribbean).
For example, the disconcerting documentary THE END OF POVERTY, which shows how we could have already seen the current credit crisis coming 500 years ago. Poverty is no accident.
Another film from the diaspora is the ‘speed course’ THIS IS MY AFRICA. In this splendidly designed documentary, 20 well known and unknown Africans and Africa connoisseurs show us a ‘different Africa’ through their personal memories, experiences and tastes.
The long feature film SKIN presents the true story of Sandra Laing. Sandra was born during the time of apartheid in South Africa as a dark-skinned child from white parents. Through a twist of fate, the dark genes in her blood are very apparent. Despite a loving upbringing as a white child, she is kicked out of a white boarding school and ‘reclassified’ as coloured. Her father fights this successfully, but when she later falls in love with a black man, a rift in the family is inevitable. The real Sandra Laing will be present during the festival.
