WAITED FOR is a documentary that interweaves three stories of South African lesbians with one thing in common: they all adopted across racial lines and became the mothers of black children. Through their stories we see the progress that has been made in South Africa, but also the difficulties that families face when they challenge the traditional hierarchies of race and heterosexism that are still deeply entrenched in the South African psyche.

Nerina Penzhorn was born in New York and raised in South Africa. She received her B.A. from the University of Cape Town after which she moved to California. In Los Angeles she worked for OUTFEST, the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Film Festival and started her career as an editor en director.
