Wendo Kolosy composed his first songs on an old guitar, traveling up and down the Congo River. When Papa Wendo’s fame grew, his music was banned by the Belgian colonial authorities and the Church. Nevertheless, Wendo became the first superstar of Congolese rumba. His music stood in the 1960s as a symbol of hope for an independent Congo and encouraged people under the dictatorship. A musical homage to Papa Wendo with breathtaking images and unforgettable interviews.
Jacques Sarasin, from Switzerland, previously directed JE CHANTERAI POUR TOI (2001), the documentary about Malian guitarist Boubakar Traoré. This brought him First Prize at the International Documentary and Experimental Film Show in Montevideo, Uruguay, 2001. ON THE RUMBA RIVER is Sarasin’s second film.
