A documentary about the preparation of a popular opera in the Michigan Opera Theatre in Detroit over the slave Margaret Garner. The film intertwines Garner’s historical story with the current attitude towards race issues in the USA. Nobel Prize winner Toni Morrison was inspired by Margaret Garner’s true story, which she wrote the Pulitzer Prize novel Beloved about, which the opera is based on.

Award winning filmmaker Mustapha Hasnaoui was born in Tunisia. He is currently living in Paris, where he mainly makes documentaries for ARTE. His talent has graced us with WHEN THE LADY SINGS, among others.
