Bukom is a Ghanaian town where young people from the slums are fighting to make their way. Several world famous boxers come from there, such as World Champion Azumah ‘Zoom Zoom’ Nelson. THE FIGHTING SPIRIT is the story of three boxers and their struggle for respect, glory and prize money. A story about the ambitions of the current generation of young Ghanaians against the backdrop of the city that has produced the most skilled boxers in the world.
Director George Amponsah learned his trade at the prestigious English National Film and Television Academy. In 2004, he made THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING ELEGANT, about Congolese musician Papa Wemba. This brought him a nomination for the Grierson Award in 2005.
