DEMOCRACY IN DAKAR looks at the elections through the eyes of hip hop artists all around the capital of Senegal. The documentary follows rappers, DJs, journalists and professors during the controversial 2007 Senegalese elections. The rappers dare to express themselves freely in a land where there is no freedom of the press. The film investigates the role of hip hop in the political process.
DEMOCRACY IN DAKAR won, among others, the best documentary film award at the Texas Black Film Festival.
Ben Herson is the founder of Nomadic Wax, a hip hop record production company. While drumming in Senegal, he discovered a lively hiphop scene. Since then, he has organized several festivals and shot a documentary series. Magee MacIlvaine, the founder of Sol Productions, filmed the elections in Venezuela, Senegal and France.
