Sofia wants to be a doctor and is studying for her entrance exam. Her teachers, however, lack any scruples. One of them has died of AIDS and a biology teacher fancies Sofia. Salvador, Sofia’s would-be football star boyfriend, and a slick agent also demand their ‘rights’. De Carvolho has dedicated his film to all the strong young women of Mozambique, whose motto is: “Sending a girl to school is like sprinkling someone else’s garden”.
