In the Heart of Whiteness

Desai is out to discover what a white identity means to whites, and why segregation remains important to them. He asks all the whites, he encounters on his trip, why they are so afraid to get sucked into Africa that they separate themselves from other races, like the citizens of the Orania town do. Everyone, from the middleclass Englishman to the African Boer, cling with a rigid stare and anxious bitterness to their identity trap.
