In 1462 Portuguese colonists brought the first slaves to the Cape Verde Islands. The slaves took their music along with them and herein lay the origins of ‘Batuque’: a music genre with singing and sensual dance set to percussive rhythms. Although ‘Batuque’ was forbidden during colonial times it managed to survive underground. The band members of ‘Raiz de Tambarina’ share their passion for the music and give us a view of Cape Verde then and now.
