In 1462 Portuguese colonists brought the first slaves to the Cape Verde Islands. The slaves took their music along with them and herein lay the origins of ‘Batuque’: a music genre with singing and sensual dance set to percussive rhythms. Although ‘Batuque’ was forbidden during colonial times it managed to survive underground. Africa in the Picture
Africa in the Picture’s programme contains 44 features, documentaries and shorts from Africa, as well as the Diaspora. Comedy and satire is this year’s focus. The festival presents special events surrounding Ethiopia and Sierra Leone. A selection of festival films will be shown in Lantaren/Venster Rotterdam, Filmhuis Den Haag, Chassé Cinema Breda, LUX Nijmegen en de Verkadefabriek in Den Bosch.
