In the mid-18th century, slave-trader John Newton survives a big storm. After this, he demands a treat for the slaves on his ship: he composes the world famous song Amazing Grace. The first large-scale Nigerian 35 mm-production, The Amazing Grace is based
on this true story. The film’s starting point is the oft-questioned supposition, that the melody of the song originates from Africa. The Amazing Grace is about the moral dilemma of Newton, about betrayal, trust and love, as well as about white and black racism. Well-known Nigerian cineaste Jeta Amata has contributed greatly to the reputation of Nigerian film. His Alexa Affair (2004) was given a standing ovation at the Berlin film festival. He has made documentaries for the BBC and has acted, produced and directed films all over the world.
