A classic about heartfelt love and human desire. This first gay African film tells the story of homosexual and transsexual Ivorians in Abidjan. In their pursuit of personal happiness they muse about love, death, and God. As all characters in this film, Vincent, Laurent, and the extravagant Barbara fend for their gay and transgender rights in a uniquely African way. Philip Brooks & Laurent Bocahut started out as producing partners on Gacaca, Living Together Again in Rwanda? (2002), Madame Satã (2002) and Tchala, l’argent des rêves (2003). Woubi Cheri is their directing debut. It has been screened at the Continental Film Festival and has won several prizes. Separately, Brooks has produced Survafela (1996) and Bocahut has made In Rwanda We Say... The Family That Does Not Speak Dies (2004), and The Importance of Being Elegant (2004). The latter will be shown at this year’s Africa in the Picture.
