‘The twelve who left Bloemfontein’ abandoned their lives in South-Africa in 1960 to raise awareness for the ANC abroad. One of them was Benjamin Pule Leinaeng, stepfather to filmmaker Harris. At his funeral in Bloemfontein, Harris opens his eyes to the extraordinary courage of the man who is closer to him than he realized. His film is a posthumous acceptance of Leinaeng’s fatherhood and a tribute to twelve men who sacrificed their own lives for the freedom of their country. Reframing tradition on a political, historical, but first and foremost a personal level. Thomas Allen Harris grew up in New York City and Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania. He graduated from Harvard college, cum laude, with a degree in biology. His documentary That’s My Face (2001) won no less than seven international awards. With his own company, Chimpanzee Productions, he made his third film THE Twelve Disciples of Nelson Mandela (2005).
