Six powerful women, six beautiful voices, a couple of drums and a repertoire of spirituals, gospel, jazz, blues, hip hop and reggae. Active since 1973, the Afro-American a capella
group Sweet Honey in the Rock are mainly inspired by the battles of civil rights, injustice and discrimination, but also by spirituality, freedom and love. These vocal activists are observed from close quarters in this astonishing portrait of their daily lives and their onstage dynamism. Stanley Nelson is known for his pioneering work in historical documentaries, such as the acclaimed The Murder of Emmett Till (2003), featuring a black youngster who was murdered for wolf whistling to a white woman. Nelson regularly teaches film making, among others at the Brooklyn College.
