Psychiatrist Samia returns to Algeria in the nineties, after finishing her studies in Belgium, and treats veterans of the French-Algerian war. More and more she is put under pressure by fundamentalist staff at the hospital. Mahfoud, a teacher at a technical lyceum with whom Samia starts a relationship, gets suspected of being a fundamentalist. The Suspects is the film version of a novel by Tahar Djaout, who was murdered by Islamists in 1993. The characters are based on people from the author’s own life. Kamal Dehane was born in Algiers. H later moved to Brussels, where he studied fil and worked as a film directing teacher. In1984, he made his first short Nejma before moving on to documentary film. The Suspects (2006) is his first feature film.
