Ever since Calypso musician Harry Belafonte visited Cuba in 2000 and convinced Comandante en Jefe Fidel that hip-hop is a cultural expression that’s OK for the revolution, Cuban hip-hop has been shaking up Havana’s streets with an alternative Black jive in Spanish full of positive energy. This new beat has caught on all over the Caribbean, in New York, in Portugal and even in Amsterdam. As Knowledge One MC from Portugal tells us on the Leidseplein: “Real hip-hop, true hip-hop, comes from wherever you are from, comes from your heart.” Antonio Jose Guzman is a Dutch-Panamanian photographer, documentary maker, author, poet, VJ and audiovisual artist. His work has been shown in magazines and exhibitions in Europe, Latin-America and the USA. Among others, he created the documentary A Poetic Journey into Latin American Hip-hop.
