Rita is seventeen, just about to graduate, and desperately in love with Youri. Both are from Casablanca’s middle class. The only difference between them is their religion: Rita is Muslim, Youri is Jewish. With plenty of verve, Laïla Marrakchi paints a portrait based on her own experiences of privileged youth in Morocco trying to find their way through Western and traditional ideology. This film caused a lot of controversy in the Moroccan press, but was extremely popular with audiences. Laïla Marrakchi was born in Casablanca. She studied Film in Paris and after she graduated she worked on various films. In 2000 she directed her first short film L’Horizon perdu. After several documentaries and more short films, she produced the long feature film Marock in 2005.
