Jumpin’ the Broom: The New Covenant

In pre-civil war America, slaves were not allowed to marry. Jumping over a broom provided young Africans in love with a ceremony to seal their “marital” union. Centuries later, African-American gays and lesbians declare openly their love for their partners. The long, hard struggle for civil rights opens a new chapter as the Bush administration threatens to take away once more their right to matrimony. Debra Wilson lives and works in Oakland, where she is head of the Moyo Entertainment production company. She is a director and producer of the news- and entertainment show Inside Blast.
