Welcome to the miraculous world of SAPE, a bizarre and flamboyant cult which developed around the Congolese singer Papa Wemba (who features prominently on the soundtrack). The Sapeurs raised haute couture to a religion, and express their identity through the amount of Armani on their bodies. At the same time, the film sketches an image of the current problems affecting migrants in Paris and Brussels. English-Italian Cosima Spender studied History of Art, Anthropology and afterwards Film in London. Among others, she produced Life and Death on Exmoor (2001) and Ibrahim Ferrer (2003) about the Buena Vista Social Club. The Importance of Being Elegant follows Africa’s top musician Papa Wemba.
