How to Conquer America in One Night

Haitian Gégé comes to Canada with an insatiable hunger for all things North-American: burgers, snow, and a certain blonde model. To conquer the blonde is to conquer America! Upon arrival at his uncle’s flat in Montréal, he finds a man nostalgic for his old country, who prefers Haitian cuisine to fast food, and who pines for the Haitian girl he once loved even though he has a fine blonde right there. A comedy about the hopeful beginning and jaded ending of the immigrant experience. Dany Laferrière (1953) was born in Port au Prince, Haiti, from which he fled in 1976 to settle in Montreal. He published his first of many awarded novels, How to Make Love to a Negro Without Getting Tired, in 1985. Laferriere has adapted most of his work for screen. In 2004, his directing debut How to Conquer America in One Night, was shown at the Montreal Festival des Films du monde and has won several prizes.
