Hamlet of women tells the story of the dramatic period of civil war in Algeria in the ’90s, using a light tone and a sense of humour. When men from a small village go looking for jobs, they leave their weapons behind with their women for protection. Slowly but steadily the women get to know their own strengths. Mohamed Chouikh, born in Algeria in 1943. He started his film career as an actor, playing a role in René Vautier et Ahmed Rachedi’s Dawn of the Damned in 1965. In 1966, he played Lakhdar in The Wind of The Aures by Lakhdar Hamina (awarded at Cannes). In 1972 Mohamed Chouikh directed his first films for the Algerian Television. Today, together with his wife Yamina Bachir-Chouikh, he continues to write, direct and produce Algeria’s finest films.
