Ambitious tale of a French black family. The eldest daughter’s marriage to a white man leads to an explosion of family secrets, unravelling an intricate web identity issues; the issue of ‘blackness’ interlaced with gender relations and fights about rum. Meanwhile the victim’s pretext and the image of the white man as the source of all evil get a good kicking. The story develops as the home video camera slides through the family members’ hands during the wedding day. Born in Paris but originally from Martinique, Julius-Amédée Laou wrote and directed (theatre)drama. His first short film Solitaire à micro ouvert (1984) won in Venice. La vieille Quimboiseuse et le Majordome (1987) was his first long feature film, French wedding Caribbean Style (2004) his second.
