Over 100 years after Stanley’s expedition up the Congo River, Thierry Michel takes us from estuary to source and reveals the beauties and complexities of the troubled nation named after it. By masterfully inter-cutting eloquent archival footage with naturalistic sequences of the joys and fears of day-to-day people, remnants of Mobutu’s mad grandeurs and discussions with the ultra-violent Mai-Mai rebels, Congo River offers us an honest, loving and hopeful picture of what many only perceive as a « Heart of Darkness ». Thierry Michel was born in Belgian Charleroi. He studied Film in Brussels and soon started making documentaries. His first feature film was Hiver 60. Michel got in the spell of Africa and produced various film about this continent.
