In the 1950’s, Calypso was at the height of its popularity in Dirty Jim’s Swizzle Club in Port of Spain. This documentary relives several legends of Calypso, including Lord Superior, Mighty Sparrow, Bomber and Mighty Terror. Director Pascale Obolo reveals how Calypso is more than just catchy music: often that music is accompanied by strong words and a lyrical translation of history-- the reasons that Calypso is often referred to as ‘the soul of Trinidad’. Pascale Obolo was born in Cameroon and discovered Trinidad through the carnival that takes place there. He often used to travel to this Caribbean island. Thanks to an accidental meeting he got under the spell of Calypso music, which was also the basis for his film Calypso@Dirty Jim’s.
