Tine Kastiel was the first civilian casualty in Surinam’s Guerilla War of the late 1980’s, which reached its tragic low when 40 villagers were slaughtered at Moiwana. The battle between Ronnie Brunswijk and army commander Desi Bouterse lasted from 1986 to 1992. Hundreds died; thousands left their homes in search for a safer haven. Many of the destroyed towns have meanwhile been rebuilt, but the wounds are far from healed. Krank Zichem unveils the emotions that still lie beneath the surface after one of the most heart rending episodes of Surinam’s history. Dutch director Frank Zichem (1945) graduated in 1973 at the Dutch Film and Television Academy. In 1974 he made the TV documentary Papieren Nederlandertjes (Dutch people made out of paper) featuring Surinam children. In 2003 he directed Katibo Ye Ye.
