Beur Cinema: Getting out of the Banlieue

Ever since the 1980’s, the second generation of North African immigrants in France set out to develop their own unique film tradition: the so-called Beur Cinema, with film makers like Rachid Bouchareb, Mehdi Charef, and Karim Dridi. Soon they were joined by French film makers such as Olivier Dahane, Thomas Gillou, and Matthieu Kassovitz, and by Algerian film makers in exile, who share their problematic choice for hybrid identities in their films. The Banlieues, French outskirts, are a frequent stage for their films. Most Beur films deal with problems of discrimination, racism, unemployment and violence from a typically male point of view. The characters challenge adversity in their struggle for a way out.
