High Lights Africa in the Picture 2006

The 2006 festival turned out to be an immense success. No less than 84 productions (21 features, 25 shorts & 38 documentaries) from 25 countries were screened. High Lights Africa in the Picture 2006

The 2006 festival turned out to be an immense success. No less than 84 productions (21 features, 25 shorts & 38 documentaries) from 25 countries were screened. The public enjoyed a diverse programme in various Dutch cities like Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, Nijmegen, Eindhoven and Den Bosch. Especially the educational and open air screenings were a big hit. The festival could also count on lots of media attention. Over 30 articles were published in various media.

The tenth edition of the festival will kick off on 6 September 2007, but in the mean time here are some of the high lights of 2006:

- The sold out interactive debate: “Congo Trippin’.” The topic was the first ever elections in over 40 years.

- The interest from schools in the festival keeps increasing every year. In 2006 more than 800 pupils attended one of our educational screenings. The level of the schools were as diverse as the programme.

- People turned out in droves for the open air screenings in their neighbourhood. It has turned out to be a perfect tool for promoting social cohesion in urban neighbourhoods rife with tensions.

- The premiere of the Surinamese documentary “A Historical Journey with Cynthia McLeod” was a popular success and was attended by its subject, who is a prominent historical author.

- The marathon screening of the first groundbreaking season of the gay African-American sit-com “Noah’s Arc”.

- The Dutch premiere of the Academy Award nominated film “Indigènes” by Rachid Bouchareb.

- The screening of the award winning documentary “The Twelve Disciples of Nelson Mandela” in attendance of its director Thomas Allen Harris. It was followed by a lively Q&A.
